Top German Official Urges Sanctions Enforcement on Israel
Siemtje Moeller, deputy chair of the Social Democratic Party's parliamentary group, expressed her concerns in a letter addressed to colleagues after visiting Israel and the Gaza border area, according to a German newspaper.
A member of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition, Moeller described the situation in Gaza as "catastrophic," referencing reports from the UN and humanitarian organizations about increasing deaths caused by starvation.
She questioned Israel's claims of unhindered humanitarian aid, pointing out that numerous aid requests have allegedly been rejected.
Moeller said that the Israeli government seldom acts unless pressured from outside, recommending three actions: partially halting the EU-Israel Association Agreement, sanctioning far-right cabinet officials, and curbing arms sales to Israel.
She also contended that the recognition of a Palestinian state should no longer be viewed as a "taboo" in international diplomacy and argued it does not have to await the conclusion of a peace process.
Earlier this year, Moeller's Social Democratic Party entered a coalition government alongside Merz's conservative faction.
